We always appreciate individuals raising awareness for our charity and helping fundraise, and this month we want to put the spotlight on three notable fundraisers who have done tremendously to help Prostate Cymru.
The Affordable Picture Show
Cefn Sidan Rotary Club President Nominee Godfrey Rees held an exhibition called ‘The Affordable Picture Show’ at the Ashburnham Hotel in Pembrey. The exhibition showcased 50 oil paintings – 40 of which were painted by Godfrey and the remaining by his wife Sally, who was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International for her support of Godfrey during his kidney transplant in 2008.
The event was an outstanding success, raising a staggering £1,800 for Prostate Cymru.
75 year old Godfrey is a former detective from the Metropolitan Police who has been blind on two occasions in his life. Through experimental surgery carried out at Moorefield’s Eye Hospital he was able to regain his sight and now enjoys painting prolifically and supports charities such as Prostate Cymru through sales of his work.
Helen’s Dive for Dad
Helen Evans, an associate legal executive from Pen Y Fai, took a giant leap of faith on the 19th April as she took part in an amazing tandem skydive.
Helen decided to take part in the challenge to support her father, Revd Canon Edward Evans, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Canon Evans is the vicar of the benefice of Laleston and Merthyr Mawr with Pen Y Fai. He also holds governor positions at local schools including Trelales Primary, Pen Y Fai CW Primary and Bryntyrion Comprehensive.
Helen fundraised tirelessly in her local community and raised an amazing £3,333 for Prostate Cymru.
Speaking about the skydive, Helen said: “It was an amazing experience and I am just so pleased that I have had the opportunity to do this for such a worthwhile and meaningful charity. I want to say a massive thank you to all those who donated.”
Cowbridge Mayor’s Nominated Charity
Councillor Peter Knapp, Mayor of Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town 2014-2015, chose Prostate Cymru as his nominated charity for the year.
During his mayoral year, Peter held a number of events to raise money for the charity. The first was a monthly coffee morning on the first Saturday of every month at Cowbridge Town Hall. In the spring, Peter organised two further fundraising events for the charity.
The first was a sold out concert that featured popular Rock Choirs from Cowbridge, Bridgend and Pontyclun. The second event was a gourmet charity dinner at The Bear Hotel and featured lovely entertainment from Mr Moose Productions.
In total, Councill Peter Knapp raised over £5,000 during his year in office and we couldn’t thank him enough for his support and work he did for the charity.
We also wanted to give a special mention to Mayor of Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town 2015-2016, Councillor David Morris who has also named Prostate Cymru as his nominated charity along with the Motivational Learning Trust.
