You could be cycling alongside our special rugby guests. Three former Welsh international rugby players will be taking part in the cycling challenge on Sunday 13th September in aid of Prostate Cymru.
Getting involved this year are former rugby players, Dafydd James, Gwyn Evans and Gareth Cooper. All three, who have played for clubs including the Llanelli Scarlets, Newport Gwent Dragons and Maesteg RFC, will be riding alongside cyclists in the sportive.
Gwyn Evans, former fullback for Maesteg RFC, said: “The Five Valleys sportive is a great and challenging event that helps raise awareness for a brilliant charity. I hope more people can get involved. I am looking forward to taking part. It will be an exciting experience and riding alongside Dafydd and Gareth, and supporters of the charity will be great fun.”
Andy Thomas, Chairman for Prostate Cymru, said: “We are thrilled to have three former international rugby players get involved in the Five Valleys cycle.
“The Five Valleys Sportive has always been popular and to have three former rugby players get involved is fantastic. It is for a worthy cause and will help raise awareness of the charity. Last year we had Olympic gold medallist Nicole Cooke, so to have more notable athletes take part this year is great and will hopefully encourage more to sign up for years to come.”
The Five Valleys Sportive has been going strong for three years and was the brainchild of Prostate Cymru Ambassadors, former rugby player Ray Giles and distinguished cyclist John Pritchard.
Last year’s Five Valleys Sportive had 350 participants and Prostate Cymru is hoping to better that number this year with 500 participants. All individuals are welcome to take part in the cycle, whether they are part of a club or just keen cyclists, and have the option of cycling by themselves or in a group. There is also the option of a 54-mile route or a 72-mile route, taking individuals through Welsh towns such as Bridgend, Hirwaun and Neath.
Individuals will have the opportunity to raise money for Prostate Cymru. Prostate Cymru was established in 2003 and is the leading charity in Wales fighting against all prostate diseases. The charity works with medical professionals and aims to raise awareness, promote understanding and fund both the latest medical equipment and the training of healthcare professionals.
