Christie Squires, a Careers Advisor from Carmarthen, ran the Great North Run in an amazing 2 hours, 40 minutes and 14 seconds on Sunday 10th September for Prostate Cymru. The Great North Run is commonly known as the largest half marathon in the United Kingdom. The popular yet tough 13.1 mile route featuring hills and inclines takes participants from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields.
Up to 57,000 people took to the streets to take part in the renowned race including Olympic and World champion Sir Mo Farah CBE who won the elite race of the Great North Run for a record breaking fourth time. Speaking about her own race, Christie said, “It was fab! I really enjoyed it, such a fantastic atmosphere so it was a great experience.”
Christie was running to support her father who was diagnosed with prostate cancer and in memory of her uncle who sadly passed away following the advancement of his prostate cancer. Christie has been raising funds for Prostate Cymru through her participation in the event but has also been raising awareness at work and in her community. Following some time to recover from the weekend’s race, Christie will once again be lacing up her trainers for Prostate Cymru. Christie will be running for the charity at Cardiff Half Marathon as part of the biggest Prostate Cymru team at the event to date. Over forty runners have signed up to run as part of Team Prostate Cymru at the popular Welsh road race on Sunday 1st October.
