Welcome to Prostate Cymru

Advancing Prostate Cancer Research through the Eddie Butler PhD

Prostate Cymru, in collaboration with Cardiff University, has launched a prestigious PhD studentship, aimed at unravelling the complexities of prostate cancer biology. This studentship honours the legacy of Eddie Butler, a renowned rugby player, broadcaster, and passionate advocate for men’s health, who inspired many through his work with Prostate Cymru. Here, we meet the exceptional PhD student who has stepped into this critical role, ready to make a difference in the fight against prostate cancer.

Meet Sam Hawkins

Sam joins this groundbreaking initiative with a passion for oncology research and an unrelenting commitment to understanding the biology of treatment-resistant prostate cancer. With an academic background rooted in cancer biology and genetics at Cardiff University, Sam has demonstrated remarkable expertise in cancer research, including a MSc exploring a novel treatment for prostate cancer.

“I’m honoured to be part of this project. It has the potential to transform our approach to understanding how prostate cancer grows and how the biology of the tumour influences the response to treatment,” says Sam. “This studentship allows me to contribute to an area of critical need and aligns with Eddie Butler’s inspiring legacy of improving outcomes for men with prostate cancer.”

The Challenge of Treatment-Resistant Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men, with many cases progressing to advanced stages that resist conventional therapies. This studentship focuses on the biological underpinnings of treatment resistance. By investigating the biology of this lethal disease in more detail, Sam aims to uncover new treatment strategies for prostate cancer.

“Over the next three years, Sam’s PhD research will not only advance scientific understanding, but also inspire hope for countless patients and their families” says Dr Helen Pearson, Sam’s supervisor at Cardiff University.

Stay tuned for updates on Sam’s journey and findings as he works to transform prostate cancer treatment. Together with funding from Prostate Cymru, we can make strides towards a future where prostate cancer is no longer a major cause of cancer-related deaths in men.
