A charity cricket match and fun day at Ammanford Cricket Club (CC) featuring rugby players from the Ospreys including Justin Tipuric and Sam Davies, and former Ammanford CC player, Dan Evans, raised more than £2,000 for Prostate Cymru and the Hywel Dda Urology Unit in Glangwili and Prince Phillip Hospital on Sunday 3rd July.
The rugby players made special appearances in a team pulled together by the event’s main sponsor, Llanelli-based construction company Morganstone. Ammanford batted first, scoring 81 for 7 off 20 overs but were beaten by the visiting side who managed to reach their target of 82 with only 8 wickets down after 17 overs.
The event was embraced by the entire community with adults and children all getting involved in the fun. The day was reflective of the club’s growing community base, with 160 children now playing for the club at various age groups, a big increase from the 40 playing three years ago.
MP Jonathan Edwards also attended the event and officially opened the club’s new practice nets. Representation from the ECB and TRJ also attended the ceremony, both of which made the project possible.
Other cricket matches took place throughout the day, supported by a number of other local companies including Swansea Building Society, Llys Cennen Solicitors, The Inflatable Fun Company, Pendragon Waste, Thomson Legal, Cwm Planning & Design, and Hobart Engineering.
Entertainment was provided by Dawnswyr Penrhyd and local musician and singer Jemma Krysa.
Prostate Cymru is the prostate cancer charity for Wales. Founded in 2003 and based in Cardiff, its goal is to improve Welsh prostate health all across the country through the improvement of equipment, training staff and raising the nations understanding of prostate disease.
The Urology Unit Prostate fund is one part of the Hywel Dda Health Charities, which supports patients, staff and services within the Hywel Dda University Health Board. They exist to make a difference to thousands of people cared for by the University Health Board across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. The aim of the Urology service is to establish a state-of-the-art Diagnostic Centre for Prostate Cancer Patients at Prince Phillip Hospital.
Jeff Roach, Chairman of Ammanford CC, said: “We chose to support these two charities as, sadly, both Morganstone and Ammanford Cricket Club have been widely affected by prostate cancer. Together, we want to do whatever we can to assist in fighting this condition. It was wonderful to see the community and local businesses coming together to support the day. We would like to thank Morganstone for their support and all of the volunteers who made the day a resounding success.”
Ian Morgan, Managing Director of Morganstone, said: “The day was a fantastic success, raising much needed funds to fight prostate cancer across Wales. We would like to thank the local community and businesses for taking part and supporting the inaugural Morganstone and Ammanford CC cricket match. We look forward to making this an annual charity fun day.”
