The Five Valleys Sportive made a triumphant return this August, raising over £18,000 for Prostate Cymru.
A record-breaking 300 cyclists participated in the event, taking on the challenging 54 or 80 mile routes from Margam Park.
Organisers extended their heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined the challenge this year, emphasising the collective spirit that made the event a resounding success.
The Five Valleys route boasts a rich history, originating as a road race initiated by the Port Talbot Wheelers in 1958.
It quickly gained prominence, becoming one of Wales’ most renowned races. Its popularity stemmed from its demanding course, which includes some of South Wales’ most historic climbs, such as the Bwlch and Rhigos mountains.
Notably, it was the only race in Wales to receive Star Trophy status, now known as the Premier Calendar.
This year, riders faced a unique challenge due to the closure of the Rhigos Mountain.
Rather than deter participants, this obstacle inspired them to tackle a longer route, pushing themselves to complete 80 miles instead of the usual 72.
This adjustment added an extra layer of difficulty to an already gruelling course, further highlighting the determination and resilience of those involved.
Owen Pugsley, Head of Commercial Operations, expressed his gratitude for the event’s success, saying, “We are so grateful for all the support the Five Valleys has had this year. It was a fantastic day, and all of the cyclists should be so proud of the challenge they took on and the fundraising that came from it. Neither route is an easy ride, and it’s great to see so many people taking on the challenge. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors of the event Dunraven, Radnor Hills, Hopkins Machinery and Enterprise Holdings for their support, without their help it wouldn’t be possible to put on an event like this”
The funds raised will go directly to Prostate Cymru, a charity that receives no national or government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of its supporters.
The money will be used to further the charity’s mission of raising awareness, improving research, and enhancing treatment for men affected by prostate disease or cancer.
As the event continues to grow, it cements its reputation as not only a challenging sportive but also a crucial fundraising effort in the fight against prostate cancer.
The Five Valleys Sportive is set to return on August 10, 2025, promising yet another day of camaraderie, endurance, and community spirit.
