On Tuesday 20th June, Cymdeithas Bro Preseli presented a cheque for £1000 to Prostate Cymru in Llwngwair, Pembrokeshire. The cheque was accepted on behalf of the charity by Simon Moffett and Dai Davies, members of the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru.
The group raised the funds as part of their work organising ‘Ras Beca’, a five mile nationally recognised annual fell race. Fell running is a popular sport which involves racing off road and over upland country. The ‘Ras Beca’ incorporates the Preseli Mountains. This year is the fortieth year the event has run, the first race having taken place in 1977. Ras Beca commemorates the nineteenth century Rebecca Riots when farm workers disguised as women attacked tollgates in protest against taxation affecting the large agricultural community in Wales. In line with tradition the winners use axes to smash their way though symbolic tollgates at the finish line.
Accepting the cheque, Simon and Dai thanked Cymdeithas Bro Preseli for their generosity and for thinking of Prostate Cymru.
