Iona Thomas Marks is the proprietor of Gegin Fach Y Wlad which is a highly successful catering operation based in Carmarthenshire. Among her many ventures, Iona is the resident caterer at Police Headquarters in Carmarthen as well as running the very popular café based at the Carmarthen Livestock Market.
John Williams and Brian Harries, representing Prostate Cymru recently travelled to Carmarthen Livestock Market to receive a cheque for £220 which had been raised by Iona and her staff with a raffle which they organised at one of their recent social gatherings.
Iona and her staff feed hundreds of hungry farmers each week and the endless queues at the counter were testimony to the quality of food being served. Iona confirmed that having a customer base which was predominantly male, she was well aware of the high incidence of Prostate Cancer amongst men in Wales and was very pleased to be supporting Prostate Cymru emphasising how important it was that all money raised was spent in Wales.
In thanking Iona and her staff, Brian Harries confirmed that 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer which becomes 1 in 3 if there is a family history. He also explained that as well as supporting specialist medical units in Wales by funding equipment and training, one of the key functions of Prostate Cymru is raising awareness so that men understand that early detection is the key to achieving a successful outcome.
