Laugharne in Carmarthenshire is well known for its connections with Dylan Thomas and more recently the location for the drama series Keeping Faith.
However Laugharne also has a Corporation which is among the last surviving medieval corporations in the UK, dating back to 1290 when it was granted the status by Royal Charter.
It is a tradition which has held steadfast for more than 700 years, and one which distinguishes it from most other towns in the UK.
The Corporation is very active in the community and has taken on the responsibility for cutting the grass on the costal path in the Laugharne area.
In acknowledgement for their work they were given £500 which the Corporation decided to donate to Prostate Cymru.
Presenting the cheque The Portreeve David Jones said “We are pleased as a Corporation to support a charity in Wales which does so much work in both raising awareness and supporting men who have had prostate cancer”
Receiving the cheque, Carmarthenshire Friends of Prostate Cymru Chairman Deric Rees said, “This is an excellent example of Laugharne Corporation both carrying out work in the community and supporting the work of Prostate Cymru and we are very grateful for their efforts. The charity sector has been hit hard by recent events and as a result, we have lost a significant amount of fundraising in the last year due to lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures”.
