Prostate Cymru has launched a public information module for members of the public to learn more about the prostate gland, benign prostate disease and prostate cancer. The resource is based on an innovative e-module that was created for GPs and medical professionals launched by the charity in March 2018. It is hoped that the section of the charity’s website, produced by the wonderful team at Learning Industries in conjunction with the Prostate Cymru’s Chairman Andy Thomas, will be useful for those wishing to learn more about the common diseases of the prostate.
A quarter of all GP visits relate to urology matters. Common prostate issues include benign prostate disease and prostate cancer. Benign prostate disease, or enlargement of the prostate, is a very common disease in men that can cause significant urinary symptoms. Prostate cancer is currently the most common cancer diagnosed in men in Wales and is the second biggest cancer killer in men in the UK after lung cancer. In Wales, men have a 1 in 8 chance of being diagnosed with the disease, with the risk increasing to 1 in 3 if there is a family history of the disease.
Prostate Cymru hopes that the new user-friendly and accessible resource will help answer some of the queries people may have about the prostate and its most common diseases. The section of the website is part of the charity’s plan to help raise awareness of prostate issues and there are exciting plans to develop the website further.
