New Campaign to Combat Prostate Cancer Features Rugby Legend Colin Charvis

Prostate Cymru is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking awareness campaign aimed at tackling prostate cancer across Wales.

This initiative, marked by striking billboards in cities and towns throughout the country, underscores the charity’s commitment to educating the public about the importance of early detection and diagnosis.

The campaign’s powerful central message is straightforward: early diagnosis can save lives. Prostate cancer often presents without symptoms, making awareness and early detection critical.

The statistics are sobering: 1 in 8 men in Wales will face a prostate cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. For those with a family history, the risk rises to 1 in 3, and it climbs even higher for black men, with 1 in 4 affected. These numbers highlight the urgent need for widespread education and proactive health checks.

A key highlight of this campaign is the involvement of Colin Charvis, the legendary former captain of the Welsh rugby team. Charvis’s participation brings a high-profile voice to the cause, helping to amplify the message across the nation. His personal commitment to the campaign emphasises the importance of this cause and encourages men to take their health seriously.

As part of this campaign, Awareness Volunteer Dai John, a prostate cancer survivor who beat the odds, and his son Gareth John are featured to emphasize the heightened risk for those with a family history. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of knowing your risks, especially when the likelihood of developing prostate cancer is as high as 1 in 3 with a family history.

The billboards, part of a partnership with Route Media, are strategically placed across the whole of Wales to capture public attention and feature compelling imagery and crucial information about prostate cancer. These visual aids serve as daily reminders of the importance of awareness and proactive health measures.

In a significant boost to regional healthcare, Prostate Cymru recently funded a Specialist Cancer Practitioner (SCP) at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. This role enhances patient care for those in West and North Wales, directly reflecting the charity’s dedication to improving local health services.

Notably, all funds raised by Prostate Cymru stay within Wales, ensuring that local communities directly benefit from their efforts. This local focus ensures that the impact of every donation is felt where it’s needed most.

Prostate Cymru invites everyone to participate in this vital initiative. Whether through self-education, encouraging others to get checked, or supporting the charity via volunteering or donations, every effort counts. Your involvement, no matter how small, can contribute to a larger impact, potentially saving countless lives across Wales.
