Prostate Cymru are delighted to announce that rugby coach and ex-Wales international player Phil Davies has joined the charity as their newest celebrity Ambassador.
Phil Davies’ coaching career, spanning more than 25 years, has included spells with Cardiff, Scarlets, Worcester and Namibia, who he oversaw at two World Cups.
Recently, Phil was appointed as Director of Rugby at World Rugby.
As part of his new role as Prostate Cymru Ambassador, Phil will be helping the charity raise awareness and vital funds as he takes part in The Big Walk this July.
Speaking about being a Prostate Cymru Ambassador, Phil said,” It is a privilege to be joining the Prostate Cymru family and supporting a charity with its roots so firmly set in Wales. Over the years I have worked in very male orientated environments and have witnessed first-hand the reluctance to talk about certain topics. I am hoping that as an ambassador I can play a part in helping open up those important conversations and improve people’s knowledge of prostate health.”
“I was shocked to recently learn that every 45 minutes a man in the UK dies of Prostate cancer, it is almost guaranteed that you will know someone who at some point will be affected. It is vital that we don’t bury our heads in the sand and instead arm ourselves with the facts to improve our understanding, this will ultimately save lives.”
Prostate Cymru is Wales’s leading prostate health charity. With prostate cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and 1 in 8 men in Wales being affected by the disease, it is so important for us to get the word out and help raise awareness.
Our ambassadors help fundraise for Prostate Cymru by participating in some of our various events over the year and supporting us as we raise awareness about prostate disease.
Tina Tew, Chief Executive of Prostate Cymru, said, “Phil is a highly regarded Welsh figure, and we are thrilled to have him on board as part of our ambassador program. He can absolutely make a difference in helping us achieve our objective of growing awareness. When Phil talks people listen and that’s what the charity needs. It helps us break down the awkwardness that can be associated with the word prostate. If people hear Phil Davis talking about symptoms, PSA tests and treatments they are more likely to go and see their GP with any concerns.”
“We appreciate the enthusiasm Phil has already shown and it will be great to have involved in our events calendar, including the celebrity Big Walk series.”
