A veterans rugby match was held as part of a charity fundraising day at Lawrence Park in Pontycymmer on Saturday 22nd April. The friendly forty-minute match between local competitors Pontycymmer and Blaengarw kicked off at 2:30pm. The match was kindly sponsored by Rage Fitness, Bridgend’s first low cost gym. In the sunshine, rugby fans including local Assembly Member for Ogmore Huw Irranca-Davies, families and members of the community watched the home side claim victory over Blaengarw.
The afternoon of fundraising also included refreshments, a giant inflatable slide, fun activities, a raffle and an auction to help raise further funds. Ahead of the event, a JustGiving page was set up, a number of local clubs and pubs held collections at their premises and committee members of Pontycymmer Rugby Club sold fundraising items such as Prostate Cymru wristbands.
Determined to raise awareness in the community in addition to fundraising, an awareness session was provided by Prostate Cymru’s Head of Awareness Dai John and ambassador Ray Giles on Wednesday 5th April at Pontycymmer Rugby Club. The session raised awareness of benign prostate disease, prostate cancer and general health wellbeing.
