Prostate Cymru recognised the contributions of those who had fundraised for the charity in 2016 at their annual ambassadors lunch on Friday 3rd March at Cornerstone in Cardiff city centre. Prostate Cymru’s Head of Awareness Dai John, Ambassador Ray Giles and President David Brace OBE presented the awards, which were kindly sponsored by Dunraven Group. The award categories were Young Fundraiser of the Year, Fundraising Team of the Year and Fundraiser of the Year.
Fundraisers are increasingly choosing Prostate Cymru as their charity for a variety of events and challenges. The shortlist for the awards included a diverse range of events including a tractor run, dinner events, coffee mornings, concerts, walking, running and cycling challenges.
Young Fundraiser of the Year was awarded to Alys Lloyd from Porthcawl in Bridgend. Alys took on three physically challenging events over the course of the summer to raise awareness of prostate cancer in her community and to support friends whose family had been affected by prostate cancer. Alys completed The Big Walk 2016, Swansea Half Marathon and Severn Bridge Half Marathon, raising a total of £218.45.
Fundraising Team of the Year was won by Team Sir Martyn Thomas, a team of thirty friends and family, who completed The Big Walk 2016 and raised £10720.26. The team’s goal was to raise awareness of prostate cancer in memory of Martyn Thomas from Porthcawl who sadly passed away from the disease in 2015. Each member of the team, who were led by Martyn’s widow Linda and children Emily, Abbey and Georgia, carried a pair of Martyn’s shoes for a mile.
Fundraiser of the Year was presented to Simon Moffett from Pembrokeshire who organised the ‘Jemima Goes To Mametz’ challenge. Simon drove his eighty-year-old classic car Jemima to Mametz to commemorate the centenary of the First World War battle of Mametz Wood. Launched on St David’s Day, Simon and Jemima attended a number of local events to raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cymru ahead of the 840-mile trip in July. Simon’s tireless fundraising contributed over £6000 to the charity.
