As part of the curriculum at Cardiff Medical School, final-year students have the opportunity to choose a specialty and complete a placement anywhere in the world. This unique opportunity allows students to gain invaluable experience and exposure to different healthcare systems, broadening their medical knowledge and practical skills. With the assistance of the Ray Murray Travelling Fellowship, I had the privilege of completing my placement in the beautiful country of New Zealand.
The placement took place at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, a small but renowned general hospital located in Hawke’s Bay, a region on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Hawke’s Bay is famous for its stunning beaches, exquisite wineries, and breathtaking landscapes. The hospital serves as a vital healthcare provider in the region, delivering essential medical services to the local community.
During my placement, I focused on observing the New Zealand healthcare system, particularly in the field of Urology. Urology has always fascinated me due to its broad scope and the variety of procedures it encompasses. This placement provided an excellent opportunity to deepen my understanding and appreciation of this specialty.
In the operating theatres, I observed a wide array of urological procedures, including prostate biopsies and radical nephrectomies. Prostate biopsies are crucial for diagnosing prostate cancer, while radical nephrectomies involve the surgical removal of a kidney affected by cancer. The diversity of procedures in Urology is one of the aspects that draws me to this specialty. Each procedure varies significantly in terms of complexity and surgical techniques, offering a continuous learning experience. I found my time in the theatre incredibly educational and was deeply appreciative of the welcoming and supportive theatre staff who facilitated my learning.
In addition to my time in the operating theatres, I also had the opportunity to work in outpatient clinics. Here, I interacted with patients suffering from various chronic urological issues, such as urinary incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and chronic urinary tract infections. This aspect of my placement provided valuable insights into the long-term management of urological conditions and the importance of patient education and support.
One particularly striking observation during my time in the outpatient clinics was the varied attitudes patients had towards seeking medical help. Some patients were proactive and sought help at the earliest signs of symptoms, while others were hesitant and delayed seeking medical attention until their conditions became severe. This hesitation often stemmed from a lack of awareness or understanding of their symptoms, as well as cultural attitudes towards healthcare. The urology team at the hospital was dedicated to encouraging these patients to seek help earlier, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate intervention. This proactive approach is crucial in managing chronic conditions and improving patient outcomes.
Moreover, the placement offered me a chance to experience the New Zealand healthcare system’s approach to patient care, characterized by its patient-centeredness and holistic methods. The healthcare professionals at Hawke’s Bay were highly skilled and exhibited a compassionate approach towards their patients, ensuring that each patient received comprehensive care tailored to their individual needs.
Of course, my time in Hawke’s Bay wouldn’t be complete without experiencing some of the natural beauty and attractions the area has to offer. I was lucky enough to hike in and around Te Mata Peak, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. I also visited beaches such as Waimārama, where the pristine sands and clear waters provided a perfect setting for relaxation. Additionally, I explored some of the renowned wineries in the region, which are famous for producing world-class wines. These experiences allowed me to appreciate the unique culture and natural beauty of Hawke’s Bay, adding a memorable dimension to my placement.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Prostate Cymru for their support, which made this placement possible. Their assistance was instrumental in providing me with this enriching experience. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the Urology team at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital for welcoming me so warmly and for making my time there both educational and enjoyable. Their dedication to patient care and commitment to teaching left a lasting impression on me, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside such a fantastic team.
In conclusion, my placement at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital was an incredibly enriching experience that significantly enhanced my medical knowledge and skills. The exposure to a wide range of procedures and patient interactions has reinforced my passion for Urology and has provided me with a solid foundation for my future medical career. The support and opportunities provided by the Ray Murray Travelling Fellowship and the dedicated staff at Hawke’s Bay have been invaluable, and I am immensely grateful for this transformative experience.
