The Ashburnham Hotel near Llanelli was the venue recently for a joint evening meeting of the members of the Rotary Club of Cefn Sidan and the members of Burry Port Probus Club. Members’ wives were also in attendance. The event had been organised to receive an awareness talk in relation to prostate cancer.
Rotary President Ian Phillips welcomed John Daniels, a trustee of Prostate Cymru and secretary of Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru along with Brian Harries who is Chairman of Pembrokeshire Friends.
Following the meal, Brian Harries gave an illustrated presentation covering both benign prostate disease and prostate cancer. He commented on how pleasing it was that ladies were in attendance and stressed the importance of men being open with their families when symptoms became apparent.
With prostate cancer, early detection is critical as 99% of those affected who are identified early can expect a full recovery and a life expectancy of at least 10 years. Following the presentation, several members who had been affected by prostate cancer, shared their experiences with those present, and without exception, had all enjoyed successful treatment thus emphasising the importance of early detection.
£400 was raised for Prostate Cymru on the night and Brian Harries warmly thanked The Rotary Club of Cefn Sidan for their continued support having donated more than £8000 to Prostate Cymru in recent years.
