Prostate Cymru Chairman Andy Thomas joined 52 others at Cardiff Breakfast Rotary Club’s ride at Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff Bay. The event, which has raised over £1500 so far, offered two routes to participants: 35 miles and 60 miles.
The club was pleased with the public’s response to the ride as several people enquired about the event and the charity throughout the day. As the ride passed through Ewenny, a policeman jokily approached organisers with “Ello, ello, ello, what’s all this then?” before making a donation, having recovered from prostate cancer himself.
Cardiff Breakfast Rotary Club would like to thank their main sponsors Tom Prichard Contracting Ltd for their support and the company’s staff for volunteering as marshals, Smart Cars of South Wales for loaning two marshalling vehicles, St John’s Ambulance for providing their services, Simon Allen of Cardiff Harbour Authority for allowing the club to begin their event in Cardiff Bay during the weekend of the extreme sailing championships and FlagShip Signs, Pontypridd for helping to promote the event.
Riders from Cwmbran Vale Rotary Club donned their lycra to say ‘Get on your bike’ to prostate cancer, raising a brilliant £1000 for Prostate Cymru. Cyclists met at The Oasis Club at Glan-yr-Afon Leisure Centre in the morning to take on a 25 or 50 mile ride.
Keith Davies, organiser of Cwmbran’s ride, explained why the club took part, “Of course it’s not just fathers who are affected by this deadly disease, it’s friends, brothers, sons or even your neighbour. We felt Father’s Day was a great way for people to spend quality time together while raising money and awareness for charity.”
In Gwent, 75 riders took part in Newport Uskmouth Rotary and Satellite Club’s ride, raising over £2200. Starting at Undy Football Club in Magor, the club offered two routes: an 18 mile route for cycling enthusiasts and a 5 mile family fun ride. Many cyclists commended the ride for being a very friendly and relaxing event, even after encountering a herd of cows approximately five minutes into their ride!
Newport Uskmouth Rotary and Satellite would like to thank Undy Football Club for allowing the club to use their facilities, District Governor Sandra Townsend for launching the event, all those who assisted with the running of the event, the cyclists who took part and everyone who has donated.
