A farm in North Wales has fundraised for Prostate Cymru during their annual blade shearing competition, Cneifio Gelert Shears.
In 2021, the Cneifio Gelert Shears went ahead with safety COVID restrictions in place, and the event raised an incredible £2200 for Prostate Cymru.
Elfred Jackson was the winner of the open and Mark Owen won the intermediate.
They also decided to pay homage to The Calendar Girls by creating a calendar with blade shearing farmers.
They have sold over 200 calendars, and they have been ordered from all over the world including New Zealand, Spain, Ireland, Falklands, and Holland.
They were also kindly donated an original painting by Meirion Jones the well known artist from Aberteifi. The painting is on the front of every calendar.
Cneifio Gelert Shears was first established in 2020 on a hill farm in Beddgelert in the heart of Snowdonia to encourage the younger generation of farmers to get involved with tradition, and help raise money for charitable causes.
Speaking about the event Llinos Owen said, “During COVID we decided to go online with over 60 competitors all over the UK taking part. I think Cneifio Gelert was the first blade shearing competition to go online in the UK. We raised over £2000.00 towards the NHS – Cancer Unit in Bangor North Wales, Children’s Ward in Bangor North Wales and the NHS charities. Last year we were able to have a live competition with covid restrictions of course on our farm and decided to fundraise for Prostate Cymru.”
She continued, “The reason why we decided to donate the money to the charity was because of personal experiences. Gareth’s father and my uncle were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer two years ago. To raise awareness of Prostate Cancer within the farming community that there is help and support out there and to raise money to different charities.”
We are so grateful to everyone who chooses to fundraise for us and help us fulfil our key aims of raising awareness, funding innovation and helping save the males in Wales.
